Avoiding the mall

While the rest of the world is out shopping, traveling or relaxing on Black Friday, some people still have to work. Journalists, of course, have to work.

I don’t mind at all. I hate shopping. And I hate crowds. So Black Friday is not a day for me.

I actually spend significant effort making sure I don’t have to cover Black Friday, either.

This year, I had hoped to do a story about non-shoppers like me, but it didn’t work out. I did, however, save some other things to work on, so I avoided the mall again. Phew.

That said, it’s still tough to stay occupied on a sloooow news day. So I did crazy purge of my files. Here are some highlights:

Here, I apparently wrote a draft of my story on a meeting agenda. I still do that sometimes, but now, I use my iPhone to write drafts.

Yes, that's a floppy disk AND a VHS tape. It's been awhile since I cleaned, apparently.

A sketch of an idea I had for a graphic. The smiley face fish made me laugh.

The end result: Three reycling bins full of old papers, folders and reports.
