A day on the water

After a week of writing about Irene, power outages, Irene, power outages and more Irene, I got back to my normal job on Thursday afternoon.

I spent the day kayaking with South Riverkeeper Diana Muller and Chesapeake Conservation Corps member Carol Wong, looking for underwater grasses.

The story isn’t coming out until Saturday, but I wanted to share a couple highlights from the trip that won’t make the paper.

First, proof that I can handle a kayak:

And a black crowned night heron pooping! (Or peeing?)

Hey, we all gotta do our business somehow!

(Sorry, the bird is out of focus, but it’s just too funny not to share. Also, a big thank you to Kevin Brooks and Dan Haas for help with bird identification.)
