Social networking has grown over the past few years to become important for many of us in our personal and professional lives.
I’m interested to find out which networks you use, so here’s my first attempt at a poll:
As for me, I’m currently using Facebook (separate accounts for personal and professional), Twitter (mainly professional) and I just joined Google+. Once upon a time, I had MySpace. I’ve never done LinkedIn or any others out there.
Social networking can be powerful tool, and I like using it to connect with my readers and sources and to promote my work. But there are only so many hours in a day, and I don’t want to get bogged down with constant monitoring and updates of my networks.
Which networks do you like and why? I’d love to hear the pros and cons in the comments below.
For work: Facebook, Twitter primarily, but I still have a MySpace profile for those bands in the dark ages. On Facebook I have both a work profile and a page that I am the admin on that is all about local music. I use HootSuite to manage those feeds and the Twitter feed. It is perfect because I can schedule tweets and Facebook posts at once.
I’ve found that Twitter is great for live events–if I’m in a place where I can’t blog the show at that moment but I want to tell the world the crazy that just happened onstage and funny bits of color commentary.
Facebook is better for conversations with folks and it is becoming sometimes the quickest way for me to track down a subject before my phone calls or emails are answered.
Personally: Facebook, Google and a personal Twitter I rarely update.
That’s a lot of things to keep straight! I think I should try HootSuite …. sounds like it is useful for managint things.
Just getting into Google+, working on better integrating Facebook and Twitter into my reporting. Probably will end up using only one or two once I can see what’s most useful.
